SEO For Developers: Live Code-Based Workshop

Online February 24-25 – $149

Google’s search algorithm updates continue to make old-school optimization less impactful and tools like CMS plugins and SEO platforms are handling so much more. As a result, we’re seeing more SEOs wanting to learn more about the technical aspects of optimization.

Similarly, as developers continue to create innovative apps and interactive experiences online, there is a need for them to know how to do that work in a way that does not hurt or often enhances SEO.

SEO for Developers is where these communities come together.

Hosted by Detlef Johnson, this two-day workshop will explore developer communications and SEO-friendly coding through discussion and live coding demonstrations.

Here’s a breakdown of what will be covered:

SEO Semantics with HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript
Learn to use semantics throughout your code to structure documents, save yourself from writing too many comments describing what code blocks do, help subsequent programmers figure out your code faster, and simultaneously optimize for the future of search engines. Plus, learn to replace old school hacks for modern accessibility using aria attributes with semantic HTML5 elements. Discover JavaScript and CSS polyfills that provide support with older browsers for key HTML5 semantic element document outlines.

PHP, WordPress, and SQL
Much of the web is published using the WordPress PHP framework (content management system and development platform). The database workhorse typically installed and configured alongside WordPress is MySQL. Basic operations using the SQL language should be understood by Technical SEO practitioners in order to know how to interpolate PHP with string literal SQL statements for standalone PHP and to become as familiar with WordPress structure as much as possible.

Python for SEO
It’s no secret that Python is a breakout language for Technical SEOs. We use it to automate reporting, connect to vendor APIs, as well as fetch or crawl through websites looking for SEO anomalies and artifacts to report and improve search engine indexing. Increase your insight into valuable search engine rankings. We’re going to dip our toes in to learn a little Python from scratch and run some scripts to demonstrate what Python can do for you.

NodeJS for SEO
We’re living days in the center of a frontend revolution with the advent of JavaScript now universally available including on the backend because of the NodeJS package and frameworks built up around it. We’re going to have a look at JavaScript on the frontend, which is absolutely vital for proper search engine indexing, and how the backend server functions to deliver code so you know how to create projects that will index and rank well. Having JavaScript on the backend also allows us to do some processing that Python alone can’t do, such as render client-side JavaScript outside of the browser.

Deep Dive into Core Web Vitals
Google introduced many metrics that have culminated in the Core Web Vitals scoring mechanism which is now part of Chrome Dev Tools and Lighthouse via Page Speed Insights. We’re going to have a look at each of the metrics and what page elements affect the scores so that you can begin optimizing for the upcoming User Experience Google algorithm update rumored to be coming in May 2021.

SEO Consequences of popular JavaScript framework choices
In order to read the development workflow tea leaves for preparing to dive into one of the modern JavaScript frameworks we’re going to have a cursory look at each, dive into basic SEO with each, and look at the general direction of the whole JavaScript framework ecosystem considering some of the latest developments from Svelte to Deno and so-called ‘Serverless’ architecture.

After this workshop, you’ll be able to:

  • Better understand how the Internet and website indexing works
  • Feel more confident having become acquainted with HTML5
  • Hold improved communications between both developers and SEO practitioners
  • Experiment with processing scripts with a local or remote terminal
  • Gain insight into modern component-based NodeJS frameworks
  • Understand how to optimize frontend code for Core Web Vitals
  • Take in the lay of the land of the whole JavaScript ecosystem
